S. Prokofiev’s opera The Gambler is one of his most famous operas, based upon an autobiographical story of the same name written by F. Dostoyevsky. The opera is rarely produced in world’s theatres due to its complexity, therefore, each production usually attracts unique attention of both the audience and the critics, and naturally turn into a major cultural event.

The present production brings together an exceptionally strong international team: conductor Modestas Pitrėnas, director Vasily Barkhatov, set designer Zinovij Margolin, costume designer Olga Shaishmelashvili and others. V. Barkhatov is one of the most famous directors of the young generation, collaborating with many best theatres of the world, and also known to the Lithuanian audience – in 2012 he directed P. Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin at the LNOBT.

The complicated vocal parts of The Gambler will be performed by famous opera soloists from Lithuania and abroad. One of the guest soloists is soprano Asmik Grigorian, who at this point is enjoying a breathtaking career: in 2019 she received an International Opera Award as the best singer in the world.

Premiere: 12 February, 2020
