Theatre is offering a challenge to young director

Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre is announcing an international directing competition for stage directors / creative teams with the aim of selecting the best artistic concept for J. Offenbach’s opera “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, to be staged as a new production in the 2022 / 2023 Season.

The production will be staged on the main stage of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in March 2023 and will be conducted by maestro Sesto Quatrini. For this production, the LNOBT will also be looking for co-production partners in different European opera houses.

Requirements for the artistic concept:

• The artistic concept should be based on the newest edition of “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” made by Michael Kaye and Jean Christophe Keck (Schott Edition).
• The artistic concept should be never presented before.
• The artistic concept should be submitted in its complete form: with direction concept, set and costume sketches, as well as a preliminary detailed list of costs.
• The total budget for the production is 300 000 EUR (three hundred thousand euros) and must include all production costs and fees for the entire creative team, including all taxes.

Requirements for the candidates:

• The competition is intended for both individual professionals and artistic teams.
• The participants should be no more than 40 years old on the date of presentation of the artistic concept.
• The participants should have proven experience in the world of opera or drama theatre.

Rounds of the competition:

During the 1st round of the competition, an international jury led by LNOBT’s Artistic Director of the Opera Sesto Quatrini, will select 3 artistic concepts from all submitted applications. The application form can be found below. The application can be submitted until 31st March 2022.

2nd round will take place on 15^th May 2022 at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre. The three candidates chosen in the 1^st round will make a public presentation of their artistic concept in English, in front of an international jury and the audience, who will also have a vote. Every candidate must be present at the second round, otherwise the candidate will be excluded from the competition. In case of any Covid-19 restrictions at the time of the 2^nd round, the candidates shall present their concepts via an online platform.
